Underground, subway windows transform into mirrors. I marry the reflections of strangers beside me—Nose-ring Girl stomps off at Grand, Bearded Guy deserts me at Division for his wife. But I collect the moments between, carry them home to occupy empty corners.
Brilliant from start to finish. Excellent writing, Nate. Last line is a favorite!
And we all do this, don’t we? Every single day, we leave our homes and marry our fleeting acquaintances, in thought. Such exquisite yet simple imagery, Nate.
I love the marrying of reflections. Such a smart take on something encountered every day by millions of people.
Oh, I made a heartfelt face. I felt a thing. Very nice.
Simply poetry. ❤
Thank you!
Oh my. This is beautiful!
Thank you, Yeshu!
I’m not a very visual person, but I can totally imagine these subway scenes. I love the monikers you give those strangers, too.
Gorgeous writing, Nate. I love the details – they are the kind of things one notices when one is lonely, having nothing else to occupy the mind. Brilliant.
Thanks, Christine! It struck me on the el ride home from seeing that musical with Nichole.
You say so much, with so few words. The last half sentence has a real wallop to it.
Introversion is paralyzing sometimes.
Not in the case of your writing. 🙂
Sad how lonely he is.
I’m sure there comes a time when he wants the real thing.
